We start this tour (Steven’s favourite) in Hartington. The charming limestone village is set around a pretty village square and home to The Hartington Old Cheese Shop where you can sample and buy the local Stilton. There are a number of cafes and a couple of pubs for refreshments and even a public convenience!
We take barely used byways and rustic lanes that lead us the picturesque village of Parwich and then to the pretty estate village of Tissington, known by walkers for the Tissington Trail. We take a moment to admire Tissington Hall before putting the 400-year old historic house behind us. Following our noses, we reach the sweet-smelling handmade candle workshop, On A Wick & A Prayer.
The renowned Dovedale steppingstones demand a short walk. Picturesque Ilam follows with its unique cottages designed by renowned Victorian architect George Gilbert Scott – famed for his work at London St Pancras station, before we take isolated lanes and a little-known track following the Manifold Valley.
A steep climb into the popular, pocket-sized village of Wetton rewards us with eye watering views. As we reach Wetton Mill, we pause for tea.
Why not make your day more memorable? Indulge in a homemade, traditionally English picnic in a handpicked location carefully chosen for its idyllic countryside setting.
